AR 670-1 explains what is authorized to wear and how to wear it. Because the Army is a uniformed service, discipline is, in part, judged by personal appearance, both in and out of uniform. Following the prescribed standards and taking pride in my appearance, are both parts of being a soldier, whether I’m in or out of uniform, whether I am on duty or off. Not only does this include my dress and personal grooming, this also includes my level of physical fitness and remaining within my approved weight.

My uniforms will not fit tightly, and will be kept clean and pressed. I will ensure that anything I carry in my pockets will not protrude or appear bulky. My appearance will show that I live by military standards and discipline.

While in uniform, I should not rest my hands in my pockets. My uniform will be kept snapped, buttoned, and zipped. This will keep my looking neat and shiny, as well as help stop clothing malfunctions before they can begin.

I must wear my Army uniform whenever on duty, unless the commander grants an exception allowing the wear of civilian clothes. However, an important fact to remember to remember when given the go-ahead to wear civilian clothes is just because I’m allowed to wear civilian clothes, I must still follow other uniform standards. For example, if I receive a last minute text message telling me I have to be at a formation in civvies on a Saturday at nine am, I must still shave. If I fail to shave in these situations, I will be forced to write an essay. Also important to remember is that if someone tells me we no longer have to write said essay, I would benefit from double-checking this information.
