Romero Movie Essay Have you ever been afraid to voice your opinion when with a large group of people? In the late 1900's Oscar Romero and the poor people of El Salvador, were experiencing injustices. A quiet man, the religious leader Romero ended up becoming a voice for his people. In the film, Romero, Archbishop Oscar Romero encompasses what it truly means to be a leader. Success is using your privileged power to empower others, promote justice, and initiate change. At the beginning of the film, Romero stands aside as Fr. Grande leads the community out of distress. After his untimely death, Archbishop Oscar Romero is forced to lead the community and does so successfully. The struggle for justice in El Salvador is never ending and the people find a new salvation in the Church. Our definition of a leader is seeing the needs of others and consider them important, stand on the side of truth even if they stand alone, and act of behalf of another even if they are inconvenienced. Becoming a voice for those who didn't have one is something Romero did very well. Romero saw the horror and destruction in his community and decided to speak out. At points in the film, Romero was standing alone with soldier's guns pointed toward him. Under the pressure, Romero continued to speak the truth of God and protect his people. Romero acted upon the community by working to end the violence with prayer. Romero used the religious practice skill of: transforming our world using our gifts and talents. Romero bravely preached for human justice and warned the men to stop fighting. Not many people would willingly sacrifice their life for their beliefs. In my eyes, Romero is a martyr in the Catholic Church. Despite the violence around him, he lead his people in prayer and used his authority to make a change.
