Archbishop Romero’s love for the Eucharist empowered the Salvadoran people to realize they were the mirror of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection. In the film, Romero, produced by a group of Paulist priests, is a film about the government cracking down on the fundamental rights of the people in El Salvador. Romero lived a life much like Christ ending with him martyred for his faith. Romero suffered for the community of the Church and all the people of El Salvador. His commitment to the Lord’s mission inspired the revolution ending repression in El Salvador. Romero’s spirituality became the hope for the El Salvadoran people through his Eucharistic belief.
There were significant similarities between Romero and Jesus’s life. Romero was appointed by the Church believing that he would be quiet and obedient. He was very shy and did not believe the church should choose sides. One of Romero’s colleagues, Fr. Grande was hosting a massive communion taking place in a public courtyard. He asked the murderers to come out and repent much like Jesus asked his disciples to pray with him before he surrendered himself to the Romans. Romero began to address the issues of government more radically the same way Jesus did with the Jews. He used his powerful position as a voice for all the citizens of El Salvador. The government was using violence for power like the Romans did with the Lord. Romero built a following, telling all people the ugly truth of their surroundings. Over the course of his life (time as archbishop), he took back his church from the military, he safely intervened a hostage situation and formed a generation of independent thinkers. He acted as no previous archbishop ever had in El Salvador. Knowing the outcome, Romero and Jesus both predicted their
