Two main stories that dark forests are archetypes in are The Hobbit and Hansel and Gretel. During these stories the forests are distressful, spooky, and worrisome. First of all, in Hansel and Gretel, Hansel and Gretel become frightened of the forest when they are left alone. The forest symbolizes distress. In the creepy forest, the children meet a child-eating witch. In the text Hansel and Gretel it specifically states that the children were scared “At a certain point, the two children found they really were alone: the woodcutter had plucked up enough courage to desert them”.
