The Lego Movie is a prime example of what a hero story is all about. There are a few main parts to the hero archetype; the start, the call to adventure, the refusal, the meeting of a mentor or co-adventurer, the first threshold, tests, the final test, overcoming the final test, and the road back/connecting back with the main world. Each of these steps has their own unique qualities to help create a great story. The main character of The Lego Movie is Emmet, who is a “typical” guy. He follows the same routine every day; he gets up, goes to work, and goes back home. He likes what everyone else does; music, overpriced coffee, etc. He lives a fairly humdrum life. Wyldstyle builds a pig-powered wagon, but it soon spins out of control because a wheel broke off. Emmet is then tasked to attach the wheel with something that spins. He attaches the wheel to his head and places himself where the missing wheel goes. Although unorthodox, it proves to be effective. This will become one of his biggest assets in becoming a true hero. While in Cloud Cuckoo Land, Emmet learns that the cops placed a tracker on him and they found where they were at. They must escape again. A group of Master Builders (Batman, Unikitty, Wyldstyle, and 1980’s Something Spaceman) all come together to build a submarine to escape the clutches of the police. Emmet focuses on what he can contribute like Vitruvius said. Everybody laughs at his idea of a double decker couch, but it ends of saving them from utter destruction, because it blended in with all the leftover bits from the submarine, so it was never questioned that they weren’t still alive. Again, his unorthodox idea saved everyone. They devise a plan on how to infiltrate Lord Business’s HQ. The plan is to be as “ordinary” and “normal” as Emmet.
