Are You Distracted by Technology? Many classrooms have a lot of technology, teachers are starting to wonder if technology is distracting students more than it is helping students learn. Many articles have been written talking about the pros and cons of having technology in the classroom. Articles also talk about the attention span of children and if technology is shortening it. Surveys show that students are not only distracted by social media and texting, they are using their phones to cheat or play games. Many students have admitted to being distracted and teachers are definitely noticing also. A classroom study showed the causes of distraction and the amount of students this affected. The majority of students are distracted by text messages. The same study also showed that one fourth of the class was distracted by using their technology to cheat. Many teachers believe this loss of attention is caused by students constant use of technology. Scholars have also looked into this theory researching the impact of technology on the brain and the way students behave. Researchers have said teachers have vantage points from watching their students all day. Other people have different views on the situation and believe technology can be beneficial to students. Students should have a limited amount of time on technology preventing their attention span from depleting. Technology can be very useful to students for many different reasons. When students have technology to learn with, learning can be more fun. Although using technology can make learning more fun for students, it also distracts them usually more than it helps them. Students having access to technology can prepare students for the future. While getting student students ready for the future is important, shortening their attention span is not
