Argument Against Johnny Football

In May I reported on how Johnny just can't be good.

Now it seems that his father feels the same way. In my earlier report, I talked about star athletes not being held accountable for their actions off the field and court, and the lifelong repercussions it can have on them.

Last week, Manziel’s attorney accidently sent a text to the Associated Press revealing that Manziel’s legal team was working on a plea deal in his domestic violence case, and that "Johnny Football" possibly spent more than $1,000 at a drug paraphernalia store.

Not long after the AP released the story, Manziel’s father, Paul spoke with ESPN’s Josina Anderson about the struggles of his son. He told Anderson that his son is a “druggie,” and that he hopes his son “goes to jail.”

It is no secret he’s a druggie. I don’t know what to say other than my son is a druggie and needs help, he just has not seeked it yet. Hopefully, he doesn’t die before he comes to his senses. That’s about all you can say. I don’t know what else to say. I hate to say it but I hope he goes to jail. I mean, that would be the best place for him. So we’ll see.”

As a parent, I can only imagine how his father, mother and grandparents feel, and my heart hurts for Johnny's father as he realizes the consequences his son is facing. But it is more proof that giving star athletes privileges, while refusing to hold them accountable for their actions from a young age, does long-term damage.

Manziel’s return to the NFL seems unlikely. He has been cut from the Browns and two different agents have dropped him.
