Argument Against Spanking

According to Webster’s Dictionary, When a parent spanks a child that is simply the act of striking a child's buttocks with an open hand, belt or paddle. What makes a parent spank his or her child? The most common answer is Frustration. Parents are frustrated now-a-days with their income. Low income parents are more likely to spank their children as opposed to the wealthy. The affluent have more options to punish their child, whereas the destitute can only punish by hand. For Example, if you are rich, you can take away your child’s cell phone, car keys, and allowance as punishment. However, for families with no phones, cars, and little access to finances, that punishment is unavailable; therefore you will need to turn to other options such as spanking. The study, involved only U.S. children. The researchers tested the kids' IQs initially and then four years later. Both groups of kids got smarter after four years. But the 2- to 4-year-olds who were spanked scored 5 points lower on the IQ test than those not spanked. For children ages 5 to 9, the spanked ones scored, on average 2.8 points lower than children who were not spanked. The results, he said, were statistically significant The IQ of children who were spanked is lower than those who were not spanked. In conclusion Straus stated "Contrary to what everyone believes, being hit by parents is a traumatic experience," Straus said. "We know from lots of research that traumatic stresses affect the brain adversely."
