In the United States approximately 2,515,458 million people will die a year. The top two causes of death currently are heart disease and cancer. We however have a life expectancy of 78.7 years (Centers for disease), if we are able to die by natural causes. We cannot control death, or when it will happen. We can however look at statistics and deduce how long we will live. When tragedy strikes and instead of optimistically saying we will live for approximately 78.7 years, we are told at the ripe age of twenty-nine that we have but months to live; would we take our life into our own hands? While many people have reached out to her, she has remained firm in her decision of using the Death with Dignity Act. Her imminent death has opened up a conversation of assisted death for terminally-ill people; this perhaps may be the spark she is supposed to start. Sadly she is forced to accept her diagnosis and condition under such short terms; most people take years to accept their fate that comes with being terminally ill. While her death if unassisted would involve some pain and suffering I believe it to be the natural course that we were destined for. I have no doubt that if Brittany chose to live with her current state, that she would in fact inspire so many and give hope to those who may be battling conditions similar to hers. We will soon know what Brittany will ultimately decide as her date is soon approaching us; I can only wish her the best. From one cancer survivor to another cancer patient: it is about the little things in life that make it worthwhile, and every person we come in contact with will forever have a part of us with them.
