If you had the chance to be smarter by having an Artificial Intelligence surgery, would you? Charlie Gordon did. In the Science Fiction story “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes, a thirty seven year old man named Charlie Gordon had an I.Q. of only sixty eight. All he ever wanted was to fit in like others and he thought the only way to do that was to be smart. So Charlie had an operation that would triple his I.Q. called A.I, and he soon became smarter, but though it was only temporary Charlie knew what it was like to be normal. Charlie’s life was greatly improved after the A.I. surgery, because Charlie became able to remember his childhood, he fell in love and developed feelings, and Charlie realised the truth about his friends. After the surgery he was able to understand what they were doing to him. “They’ve driven me out of the factory. Now I’m more alone than ever before” (Keyes 235). Charlie”s friends were afraid of him because he became so smart. Because of the A.I. surgery Charlie was able to realise the truth about his friends, and his life was more preferable. Opponents argue that the effects of the A.I. surgery wore off, but I argue that, for a short time, he got to experience what it was like to be like everyone else. It is often thought that because of the A.I. surgery Charlie grew in aggression and sadness however, when the surgery wore off Charlie went back to the way he was before, the loving, and innocent Charlie Gordon.
