Argumentative Essay: Do Guns Keep People Better?

Everyday, there seems to be a tragic accident involving guns, a school shooting, a homicide, suicides, or some horrendous incidents. Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, they're been 142 shootings on school campuses across the U.S. (Ye Hee Lee). This shows that currently, there is not only a political issue with guns, but also social issues. However, there are times when guns help people and keep them safer. Guns are used in self-defense some 2.5 million times a year (Frum). During those times, guns help deter criminals and provide tremendous self-defense benefits. For example, what would happen if you face a criminal that is threatening your life, but you are defenseless because guns are banned in your country. There are confrontations every day involving guns, some turning out good and others not as good, but how or how not do guns keep people safer? …show more content…
Some of those benefits are deterring criminals and providing a way to fighting back against possible threats. Imagine being confronted by a life-threatening situation and not having any way to protect yourself. Some pro-gun control people say that you don’t need self-protection when you law enforcement to keep you safe. This couldn’t be any closer to false. When seconds count, it takes on average 10 minutes for a police cruiser to reach the place of incidence from when you call 9-1-1 (Dane). Sometimes it has been known to take 40+ plus minutes.
