Gun control is a topic that has taken over the world in modern times. Gun control is a controversial topic that has split the country in two. I support gun control in the United States. Gun control needs to be a necessity because of the recent tragedies, the loopholes in the previous laws, and because of how times have changed. In the United States, there are laws put in place regarding gun control. In 1963, after evidence in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was released, the public was made aware of the lack of gun control over the distribution and ownership of firearms in the United States. Up until 1968, firearms were commonly sold through mail-order catalogs and over-the-counter (Robert Longely). There have also been laws regarding firearms after massacres or shootings. For example, in October 2017, Stephen Paddock murdered 59 people and injured over 500 in Las Vegas. Paddock was in possession of around 23 firearms. Semi-automatic AR-15 rifles found in Paddock’s hotel room had been filled with accessories known as “bump stocks” “Bump stocks” allow semi-automatic rifles to be fired in a fully automatic mode (Robert Longely). A bill was introduced shortly after the mas murder known as the “Automatic Gunfire Prevention Act”. This act banned the sale and ownership of bump stocks as well as accessories that turn a semi-automatic firearm into an automatic firearm (Robert Longely). Also, in Connecticut in 2012, 28 people and 2 injuries occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. The murderer was Adam Lanza. Lanza was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. He also suffered from depression, anxiety, and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). Adam Lanza had access to a rifle in his home, which resulted in the death of many (Wikipedia). Such purchases and uses of guns in recent times have shown that guns are no longer being used for protection, but instead to harm
