Guns are an essential part of American history dating back to the Revolutionary War. Firearms protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all citizens of the United States. For this reason, our forefathers assured the American people the right to bear arms as stated in the Bill of Rights. Due to heinous gun related crimes occurring throughout the United States and around the world, guns are becoming viewed as synonymous with violence. Consequently, firearms and the Second Amendment are coming under immense pressure to become greatly controlled and even abolished. Blinded by the pain of these evil shootings, people lose sight of the potential that firearms offer. Research shows that permissive gun laws are beneficial to America as gun ownership reduces crime, is an effective means of self-defense, is a way of life for many Americans, and is a constitutional right.

When attackers choose a place to do their acts of carnage, they choose the easiest targets. These targets are places where there are a lot of people and not much resistance, such as schools with gun-free zones. When places such as schools post that they are gun-free, they announce to the world and all the mentally unstable that they are open for attack, because they are unarmed to not able to fight back. According to Coulter (2000), laws enforcing gun-free zones do not protect school mass shootings, but actually make schools a greater target. Following suite, Nedzel (2014) found that to protect against shootings, offenders need to be convinced that they will not succeed with their mission by eliminating “the gun-free zones and allow licensed parents, teachers, administrators, and adult students to carry their guns into school”.
