I believe that inequality between people is a problem in the United States. While the constitutional promise of equality has always been carried forward in our nation's struggle to form a more perfect nation, in many areas of society equality and unity has been lost or forgotten. I believe that America would benefit from instating conscription as a country and individuals in the society. The last mandatory draft service in the United States was back in 1973 during the Vietnam Era. Since then the American society seems to have slowly relinquished away from military and national affairs. Many people have become anti-military, criticizing and ignoring their own protective force, while others have become despiteful towards their own nation. The American society has taken the military for granted and completely become unaware and ignored the very force that protects their freedom and rights. William A. Equality and unity would be promoted among all individuals. Along with fostering a greater sense of national unity and participation in the government, mandatory service can also provide individuals with the skill sets they require to better function later in life. Participating in military trainings will teach young people valuable character traits, such as self-discipline, teamwork, initiative and leadership skills. Mandatory military service means young men and women have no choice but join the military for at least a year. They lose their basic rights for a while. This could help them appreciate the rights which they take for granted. They would also start to value what they have more, including their country, increasing patriotism as a result.
