Leave the Drinking Age Alone The drinking age is a highly discussed topic among teens and young adults. Many people believe that the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen years of age. The majority of people arguing for this law to be passed are under the age of twenty-one. These below legal ages being the major support group of the law being changed does not give much support in it actually happening. I am against lowering the drinking age because of the short term and long term effects that would be caused by the use of alcohol. If the drinking age were to be lowered this would lead to more underage drinking in teens, a higher number of fatal car accidents by young people, and more people would grow up to be alcoholics. Mixing alcohol with this will lead to more car accidents which are potentially fatal. Considering the brain not being completely developed when a kid is eighteen this leads to poorer decisions than most twenty-one year olds would make. When high amounts of alcohol is consumed in the earlier stages of brain development; it slows or stops the development of the prefrontal cortex (Drinking Age Pro Con.) This leads to less mature adults in the future because they retarded the growth of their brain when they were younger. The law set now protects teenagers from having to make the decision of getting in a vehicle or behind the wheel under the influence. There is a lot more behind the laws from a biological stand point than what the opposing arguers see. The law is there to protect the teens to twenty age people. Car accidents will most likely continue to be the leading cause of death in this age group but by not changing the law it should keep the number of deaths from drastically increasing from alcohol abuse related
