Disadvantage: Privacy Issues Another disadvantage that I have found out about body worn cameras is the concern of people's privacy rights. Lawmakers and police departments are being urged by civil right and privacy advocates to take into consideration the risks that video footage from body worn cameras can cause. “A set of guidelines released by civil liberties groups on Friday calls for policymakers and public safety officials to limit the use of facial-recognition software and prohibit police officers from viewing body camera footage before filing their reports” (Vega). Over-surveillance of citizens can cause trouble and needs to be reviewed before being used more openly. Police departments need to make sure that they have strict privacy guidelines in place before releasing a video. This will help protect the identity of victims and suspects in regards to respecting their privacy.

In the recent years there have been many cases that went viral in the media across the nation. These stories are blown out of proportion because police officers were accused of poorly treating civilians when they were just doing their job.
