“The elephant crew gave Kenny rehydration fluids and shackled him in his stall. Less than two hours later, a night attendant discovered his bloodied body on the concrete floor” (Nelson 2). Kenny, a three year old Asian elephant, was forced to perform three times while suffering from a critical illness, and because the circus attendants did not take the proper precautionary measures, he eventually succumbed to his illness. This is one example of many that raise questions about the well-being of these captive animals like Kenny, who are being taken out of the wild to entertain humans. Pulling exotic, wild animals out of their natural habitats causes many psychological and behavioral abnormalities. Most people focus on what they see; however, it is the horrific cruelties behind the scenes that define what captive animals endure on a daily basis.
Circus animals, particularly elephants, have been under the spotlight with what attendants use to “discipline” them, bullhooks.
