Civil Rights are the basic rights that promises every individual freedom and equality. Some civil rights include freedom of press, religion, assembly and speech. Owning and partaking in civil rights has been an ongoing issue for a particular race, from the beginning of time up to this very day. Many movements, acts, bills and organizations have been put in place in order to protect the civil rights of all citizens, specifically the troubled races. For example, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was designed to protect the right to vote for all citizens by invalidating the use of any test or method to deny citizens the right to vote. The Voting Right Act was proposed on March 15, 1965 by former President Lyndon B. Johnson in his speech, “The American Promise.” In his speech, President Johnson’s purpose was not only to shed light unto the voting inequality of African Americans but also to gain support in finding a solution. To begin with, Johnson works diligently to blandish his fellow white Americans to abet the idea that all citizens, especially African Americans, should be accommodated with impartiality for it is only right and that denying one of their freedom and equality ruins the foundation of the United States. Incorporating historical references to one of America's founding documents, he alludes to the Declaration of Independence. As President Johnson remarks the making of the U.S, he says, “All men are created equal - government by consent of the governed” (paragraph 12). The Declaration of Independence expresses the values and purpose of which the United States was founded and reason for separation from Great Britain. It also secured the rights of the American people. By using the historical allusion to the Declaration of Independence, President Johnson wants the audience to understand and recall that American was left with great values and a purpose to uphold.
