Growing up in the south can be a blessing and a curse. The perks to being a southerner is the great weather, food, and that good ole southern hospitality. There’s also a down side to living in the south that includes racism, foul language, and sometimes feeling like you don’t belong because people of the lifestyle you choose. A common debate that many southern natives have is whether the confederate flag is a sign of racism or a matter of “southern pride”. In my personal opinion the confederate flag should not be on display at any public establishment. The Confederate flag was originally known as the battle flag of the confederate army during the civil war. During the time of the civil war the southern states seceded from the Union because the southern states favored slavery while the northern states wanted to abolish slavery. Many people in the south became angry at the fact that the north wanted to abolish slavery so they created their own country away from the United States. Many African Americans and other minorities have agreed that the confederate flag is a symbol of racism. The cruel things that happened to minorities in the south during the Civil War is a great reason as to why the confederate flag represents evil. The state of South Carolina has had a confederate flag flying at their capitol grounds for about 54 years but in 2015 citizens had had enough. Many took the flag down just for it to be put up again within hours. This issue was very controversial at the time due to the killing of nine African Americans at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Dylan Roof, the man responsible for this crime was seen on many occasions waving the confederate flag and his reason for committing this horrible crime is outrageous.
