1984 Summative Essay

Auberon Herbert, a writer, theorist, philosopher, and 19th century individualist states, "Liberty means refusing to allow some men to use the state to compel other men to serve their interests or opinion."This is the meaning of liberty and showing what totalitarian government is taking away from people of Oceania in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Totalitarian government is corrupting their people through control of thought (using propaganda), actions, and overall entire identity which is going against the entire point of the government, to protect the people. The government control’s everyone's thoughts using propaganda. An example shown in this novel would be the Thought Police. Winston doesn't know who is family is and what age he is because the government erased all history. George Orwell states, “Winston was dreaming of his mother. He must, he thought, have been ten or eleven years old when his mother had disappeared” (pg 38). Showing that he doesn't have a clear picture of his mother and even his age. This type of government takes away from people knowing themselves and their past. The novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, is based of a character who has to follow these strict rules along with the rest of the society. If you do not follow the rules you will have a consequence. The totalitarian government shown in this novel is taking control of everyone by manipulating them through physical, mental manipulation, and taking away their identity. Waiyaki and Winston seem similar in the ways that they do things. They both tend to break the rules and fall forbiddenly for a girl. Also it seems that they want to do what is right and are a bit scared of the
