All the readers of Krakauer’s novel, Into the Wild have different opinions on who Chris was and what he was trying to accomplish when he embarked on his journey to Alaska. Chris was introduced as an educated man who seemed to have everything a normal person would want; he was wealthy, smart, and had everything going for him. However, he was scarred by his father’s betrayal and wanted nothing to do with society. This encouraged him to make a decision to find himself and discover what life was all about. He wanted to do this by travelling to Alaska and making a life for himself. Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast. When he left for the wild, he only brought a bag of rice, a journal, some books, and some tools. He didn’t even have a compass. This shows that he wasn’t prepared enough to go out into the wilderness alone from the very beginning. Chris also made a mistake to go alone without any form of communication device or first aid kit. This is shown when hikers found his note in the bus stating, “S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death and too weak to hike out of here. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August?” (12).
