In today’s world, one sees crime by looking left and looking right. Rather than minimizing crime levels we find that they have increased. Committing a crime is a serious issue that we are facing today. All over the world crime is being committed by juveniles and adults. Nationwide, juveniles are commonly getting placed in adult criminal court, even at the age of 11. It is estimated, according to the Campaign for Youth Justice, 250,000 youth are tried, sentenced, or incarcerated as adults every year across the United States. It has caught many people’s attention whether it is right to sentence a juvenile, a child under the age of 18, to life in prison without parole or to give them the death penalty when committing a monstrous crime. It is in fact true, but why? How do kids become sick in the head? Children just don’t one day wake up and decide they want to commit crimes and become killers. There’s a lot that people have to consider, such as parents who neglect their child or even the environment that they live in. In the article, “Why are children committing murder”, by Clarence Waldron, it explains all the factors that come with a child committing murder. Clarence points out how drugs, gangs, and the easy availability of guns play a role. He believes that we have to look at the children’s families and the stress that they put over them to see if there is a certain pattern that is leading children to commit murder. Neglect can be a reason for why juveniles are found in gang affiliations. When kids feel neglected their first instinct is to find a place where they fit in and feel wanted. Once kids are in gang related situations they commonly end up under the influence of weapons and drugs. Children are easily taught and influenced by others around.
