The main water source for Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, South Dakota, and Oklahoma is predicted to be depleted 69% by 2060 (Amelinckx np). Due to the over usage of the Ogallala Aquifer by the farmers, the generations to come are susceptible to not having enough water to survive on. Although the farmers need to water their crops, there are other farming technics that wouldn’t consume as much water. Therefore, we need to do more research and practice better farming habits. Western Kansas is severely dependent upon the Ogallala aquifer. Most people don’t realize how much water we use from the aquifer daily. This aquifer is a major source of water, and if the aquifer were to be spread across the United States, it would cover all fifty states with one and a half feet of water (Braxton np). If the aquifer was completely drained it would take up to 6,000 years to refill naturally (Braxton np). More than 90 percent of the depletion is due to the irrigation of crops (Braxton np). Therefore, farming is the main cause of depletion of the Ogallala aquifer. …show more content…
While the main reason to research, this idea is to make sure we continue to take care of our water supply. Although there are many different ideas, none has been proven to help tremendously. The Ogallala aquifer can be compared to a bank account, because we have water coming out of the aquifer, but not enough water to recharge what is being taken out (Amelinckx np). From many different studies completed by the USGS they are showing that the rate of depletion is rapidly increasing (Amelinckx np). Although there have been studies showing how much we have continued to deplete the aquifer, they are still researching how to come up with a sufficient idea on what today’s farmers and future generations could do to
