I repeatedly come back to the idea that golf should be seen as a culture and the justification for the lack of conversation about race and equality is because golf cannot be seen as a traditional sport. There is no tribalism in golf as there is team sports. There is no banding together with fellows that are your equals and will stand with you through the game. This makes it more difficult to find the courage to stand for a cause. Golfers are less inclined, perhaps afraid even, to spark a controversy when they do not know if they will be standing alone against the world and its mainstream media. This makes the absence of golfer activism slightly more justified, so we can sympathize a bit with a person that must stand alone. Also, the many and complicated rules of golf take it away from the category of sport and into the category of culture. It makes for fun birthday parties and date ideas and people are usually open to the idea of playing mini golf as opposed to playing regular golf. This is because mini golf is more casual, more laid, back, has less rules, and is also more affordable. It takes the sport of golf and throws away the culture, throws away the professionalism, and gives us a simple game. This is what I believe is the key to realizing why golf has created such a disparity with the people that play golf versus those that play other sports; golf is a culture in which there are rules and constructs, and mini golf is a simple game to be played for
