In Sant Rosa, California, a fifty-five-year-old man, Dale Curtis Gaines, is currently sentenced to life in prison for the possession of stolen American Cancer Society computer equipment. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1998 and has currently served fifteen years in and is attempting to get released by Proposition 36. Proposition 36 is what changed the states three-strikes law which now makes it to where felons can be released from their sentence early if their most recent crime is not serious or violent. Due to the fact that Gaines could potentially qualify for Proposition 36, on March 15th, Gaines will have a hearing to convince Judge Shelly Averill that he will not be a threat to society if he is released

I would suggest changing it because evidence shows “that neither tends to be effective in deterring individuals from committing crimes and both may even lead to more recidivism by participants of such programs,” (Schram and Tibbetts, 2018, pg. 83). A recommendation I would recommend instead of these two policies is implementing something involving a psychologist because “findings suggest that people often engage in behaviors they know to be irrational or that offenders tend to engage in behaviors without rational decision making,” (Schram and Tibbetts, 2018, pg. 83). I believe adding some psychological help would be more beneficial to not only the felons, but to society as a whole for when they are
