Everybody has the heard the famous quote “Words are stronger than actions”. This is a quote that supports one of the many purposes of Markus Zusak writing The Book Thief. This book is a perspective the character Death, who is telling the story on a little adopted girl named Liesel Meminger. It is filled with the ups and downs of her life in Nazi, Germany. Markus Zusak wrote The Book Thief for the reader to see that books, and words specifically, are the most powerful thing anyone can have.
In The Book Thief, a book is used to show love. Love was shown through a book when Max had forgotten about Liesel’s birthday and didn’t have anything for her. To make up for it he made a little book about his adventures. He gives it to her and says, “A late birthday gift. Look in the morning. Good night,” (Zusak 237). This shows that a book was showing love because the book also talks about how much he appreciates her. After the book was given to her they only became closer and were the bestest of friends.

Thomas Baekdal, an author, writer, strategic consultant, and a media advocate, also believes that books are powerful. His perspective is just a little different. He believes that books are powerful because they make readers use their brains to imagine the contents of the book. He states in an article called, Why Books are Still a Powerful Media, “Books forces you to engage your imagination on a scale far above any other media. You can’t consume a book. You have to imagine it. You have to use your brain at maximum efficiency, because you have to think of everything,” (Baekdal n.p). What Baekdal is saying is that even though there are different way of engaging yourself in reading, the most effective way is an old-fashion book.
