In the novel The Great Gatsby Nicks father told him “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the same advantages that you’ve had” (Fitzgerald 1). Just because people have different backgrounds and experiences doesn’t mean others should look down on them. I do not agree with this quote because criticizing someone makes them want to try harder to somehow make up for the advantages they’ve missed in the past. Just because someone grows up without certain advantages, it does not mean they will not succeed. Success is determined by will and motivation not background. When I think of motivation and success, I think of Muggsy Bogues, Steve Jobs, and Jay Z. All three of these people only had success on their mind.
