The lessons that people have learned from baseball did not just come into play overnight. Baseball has the longest history in this country which dates back all the way to the 1800s (Chicago). The soldiers during the Civil War played baseball as a way to relax (Chicago); you cannot relax playing soccer, football or basketball. The games are too intense; which is the exact opposite of baseball. Just because the sport is older does not mean it is better though, but baseball still has a league that continues to grow as the years go on and some parts of the league even reach out to other countries; drafting foreign players to play in our American league (Chicago). It is a simple game with a simple goal and simple ways to stop the opposing team from reaching those goals. The simplicity of the game is just how it looks towards a spectator. When in all reality baseball is one of the hardest games to play and one of the greatest because of how amazing it is to see people excel at something so difficult. The main reason baseball is so difficult is solely because of hitting a baseball. When you are hitting in baseball players can fail seven out of ten time and be one of the greatest baseball players around. Hitting is one of the hardest things to do consistently and players must have the mental toughness to be prepared for that kind of failure. Now, why do people fail so many time to hit the ball? The answer is simple; a 90 MPH baseball coming at someone is the reason. As simple as the pros or college players make it look hitting a 90 MPH baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports. Let’s take a look at the dynamics of hitting; a batter is given a bat that is 2 1/4” in diameter max (some players have smaller bats) to hit a ball that is only 3” in diameter (Axon). The batter is then placed in a box which is only 60 feet 6 inches away from the pitcher (Axon). If the ball is coming at the batter at 90 MPH it only take 400 milliseconds for the ball to reach the batter (Axon). Baseball isn’t all about hitting and throwing the ball. Throughout the years baseball has gained a lot of notice it the literacy areas and is considered to be the most intellectual sport (Chicago). There have been many books and different types of poetry about baseball that far exceeds the quality any other writings for other sports (Chicago). There is not only writings centered on the game, but at the University of Chicago there are two classes that are completely about baseball (Chicago). The classes are Matthew Briones’s “Baseball and American Culture, 1840–present” and John Kelly’s “History and Culture of Baseball.” There are classes about sports in general, but there are not a classes about individual sports like there is for baseball. With the complexity and academic views of the game; it only has fans wanting to know more and more about the game itself, while drawing others in because of their desire to understand something that has created so many beautiful types of
