The Journey to the American Dream
If the American dream was a myth people would not be motivated to work hard, therefore the economy would collapse. Companies would not be able to sell as many products because people would not feel like they had a purpose for working; they would not be wanting to work harder to get a raise to have more money to spend. While some people think the American dream is not achievable in this economy, anyone can create their own American dream if they only work hard, have individual initiative, and are willing to take advantage of the numerous opportunities.

The Government has made many opportunities possible, such as funding for education and assistance with mortgages to make homeownership possible. People need to be willing to take advantage of these opportunities. Lipman says even though the government gives you the opportunity to get a nice house they still cost too much Lipman 63. According to the center of housing policy says, a retail sales worker makes below nine dollars an hour and in order to own a home you need to make fifteen dollars an hour. Even know there are some high tech jobs that allow people the opportunity to purchase a home, most workers will be in the traditional jobs that do not make enough money. Historian James Adams said America is a land of unlimited possibilities and opportunities(qtd. In Jackson 54). One example of this is the housing act of 1949 which promises “A decent home and suitable living environment for every living family (Jackson 56)”. The government gives you the opportunity to have a decent lifestyle which includes homeownership.
The American dream is achievable if they only work hard, have individual initiative, and are willing to take advantage of the numerous opportunities. Each person will find happiness and feel more valued as an individual when they are living the American dream. The economy has improved as people work harder.
