The use of animal testing is one of the most controversial issues making the news today. Currently, there are various industry and consumer products that still continue to test on animals; the type of industries that conduct testing on products are cosmetics, household cleaners, food additives, pharmaceuticals and industrial/agro-chemicals according to the article “About Animal Testing” At Charles River Laboratories, three dogs were forced to consume a test substance every day for five days straight. The three dogs experienced some complications, they had high heart rate, labored breathing, and they became cold to the touch. The process of where a product starts, to it being on the shelf is so lengthy that it often discredits the claim of some companies that they do not test on animals. All the materials that produce the product could contain substances that have had to undergo testing to make sure they are safe. New products are required by law to be tested for safety, but it is not required to have the products be tested on by animals. Heather Dunnuck, a student at Lone Star College states that “Animals and people are alike in many ways; they both feel, think, behave, and experience pain. Thus, animals should be treated with the same respect as humans.” Dunnuck continues, “Animals do not willingly sacrifice themselves for the advancement of human welfare and new technology. Their decisions are made for them because they cannot vocalize their own preferences and choices.” If society expects their demands for freedom of choice to be met, then they should extend that demand to include the rights of
