Imagine going through TSA and being stopped and treated unfairly just because of the color of your skin and the way you dress. Imagine being stopped at a red light for no particular reason besides “driving while black” or being Hispanic and getting asked to show the officer your “papers” or a green card. Racial profiling has always been prominent but is very unjust and a violation of peoples civil rights. The use of racially profiling somebody, should only be performed in certain circumstances, such as helping law enforcements find a possible criminal using racial cues, rather than it being severely relied on and acting on a whim, subconscious stereotyping, or irrational fears. Many argue that this use of racial profiling is used to protect us and to keep us safe yet, it’s been almost 15 years and terrorist attacks have not been brought onto us by Middle Easterns but by our very own Americans. Terrorism according to the FBI is “violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law”. So in this circumstance wouldn’t Dylann Roof be a terrorist? To our eyes he is only a white male so, of course he can’t be a terrorist. Racial profiling teaches us to solely base our perception of people and their lifestyle based on their skin color and the stereotypes that have been embedded in our brains. It’s utterly immoral and unethical to treat one person with suspicion based solely on the color of their skin yet, it’s still done. In 2015, Employees of CVS allege that they were instructed to follow black and Latino customers, because they 'always are the ones that are the thieves.'(Bruinius). This goes to show that racism still exists and not only is “shopping while black” a thing, so is the term that you’ve seen earlier before, “driving while black”. These constant occurrences creates a fearful mentality for many minorities. Children of color grow up, basically being trained for a world that’s slowly giving them trouble and also killing them off. They’re taught to be cautious when speaking to an officer, where to place their hands, and so forth. One of the current examples of division amongst officers and communities is Ferguson, Missouri. In the past there was already conflict amongst them but after the shooting of Michael Brown, this conflict expanded and resonated nationally. Despite the whole issue with the case, the separation that was shown amongst the forces became apparent. Law enforcement basically ran this city while people of all different ages and races rioted, fearing that one of their own would be next. Many say the reason why Michael Brown is dead, is because of racial profiling and that there was not much criminal activity going on with him besides his skin color being black. Well ultimately, the case was ruled in the favor of the officer being that he says it was not a race issue and that Michael Brown was coincidentally a “black criminal”.
