Ice Hockey is an intense, fast-paced game with constant body contact and injuries. This kind of aggressive nature keeps tensions high. That is why fighting has been such a big part of the game. People fight for many reasons, but mainly to settle a dispute, to gain momentum, or to police the game in their favor. Many people oppose the fighting part of Hockey, claiming it to be barbaric and unnecessary. This is why a lot of those people are pushing for fighting to be banned completely. What they don’t understand is that fighting serves many purposes and is definitely necessary. The most successful players are the skilled, valuable goal-scorers. This type of player can be seen as a big threat to opposing teams. There is a lot of hitting in Hockey, and sometimes hits that are considered dirty can badly injure players. Part of an opposing team’s game plan can be to take these valuable players out of the game to make their job easier. A fighter’s job is to protect these valuable players and ensure that if they are messed with, there will be a price to pay. This type of protection prevents these star players from getting seriously injured.
