Collaborative school consultation is an approach taken by school professionals who collaborate, consult, and discuss the needs of students. The goal of this approach is to ensure that all students are academically and socially successful. To establish success, the team meets periodically to plan, evaluate, and revise, as needed the educational plan of students. Those involved within the process include the general education teacher, the collaborative consultant, and other school personnel.

Team agreements are an effective way to address any issues that may arise as well as redirect the group back to the team’s purpose in a manner that respects every member. Team agreements can be considered a living document that can be amended as needed.
Another strategy to employ for agreement and consensus amongst a diverse group is the “Fist to Five” strategy. Fist to Five strategy provides all participants the opportunity to display with their fingers a five (most favorable) all the way to a fist (least favorable) to represent their level of support on a proposal. It can be a quick and easy measure to check-in as well as determine the support of a proposed initiative
A beneficial aspect of the Fist to Five strategy is that it concludes with a decision. The process of the strategy allows for all objections to be addressed, recognizing the minority voices, but also moving the process forward in a decision that all participants agree with to some extent.
