The Savior of Rome
Aristotle was one of the greatest Greek philosophers in his time, 350 BC. He greatly influenced and made great contributions to every feature of human knowledge. In one of his great works, (Poetics), he described the 5 things that a tragic hero must have so that the play would be appealing. He said the tragic hero must be of noble birth, or be born into royalty. In regards to the name, the hero must have a tragic flaw that leads to their doom. The reversal of their destiny, because of their crucial flaw. This then leads to realization of their actions, generating their doom, that is death. In the movie Gladiator (1999), the Protagonist Maximus Decimus Meridius reveals these traits brought out by Aristotle. It could seem that he has these traits, but in reality, not all of them are applicable to Maximus.

He wasn’t born of noble birth, but he still portrays a character of keen judgement. In this movie, we can see that he has a fatal flaw that demonstrates the act of being stubborn, to bring back the republic to the people. In another perspective, we could say that he took it upon himself to get revenge because of his family’s murder, by killing Commodus, the Roman Emperor (Antagonist) of Gladiator. As the film progresses, we can see that he gains respect over many people, as well as the spectators of the Colosseum, when they said, “Maximus the merciful!” This implies that people could portray him as the actual savior of
