Recently, over the summer I volunteered at the Arizona Science Center. I remember when I found the opportunity I was excited but also scared at the same time because I would have to drive on the freeway and have an interview with the Volunteer Director. After my interview, which was simple and fast, I became a volunteer. Being a volunteer it was my duty to provide entertainment and teach children science through table topics. Depending on the floor and exhibit, a table topic would be featured and children stopped by the tables to play games, solve puzzles, and hands on activities that they could keep. A popular game was Scat and children had to match the animal feces to the animal. It was one of my favorite table topics because I meet daring kids who were eager to play. Another table topic was science pictionary and children had to pick a card and draw what the card says. Guessing children’s drawing took imagination and humor to figure out their drawing. I am not someone who likes children and wants to work with them, however, it is different meeting kids who want to learn about science. I am willing to be around children if I am teaching them. Volunteering there has also made me more confident and comfortable talking to people, especially giving speeches and making small talk. The science center is a great place for volunteers to gain communication experience. Lastly, the people I volunteered with are so helpful and kind. I met amazing teens that are serious about their education, but also love to be there. It was different from volunteering with people at my school because the positions there require us to be professional and learn about each other in a way that is similar to a job. Overall, I had an amazing experience at the Science Center. I am going to continue volunteering on my off days and teach and learn more about
