During my time at Arlington Elementary, I was able to learn a wealth of information first hand on not only being an effective teacher, but how to connect with the students. Through my visits, I was able to create relationships with the students that I will cherish forever. The experience that I have walked away with from these fifteen hours will follow and help me as I work to earn an education degree. My preservice teacher was helpful, understanding, and very effective in the classroom. I strongly believe that I learned from the “best!” Arlington Elementary is sixty-six percent African American, one percent Asian, fourteen percent Hispanic, seven percent Multi-Racial and twelve percent White. My first day was two days after the school shooting in south Florida. Mrs. Greer gave a lecture to the students on school safety, and how she would do anything for her students. While Mrs. Greer was crying while giving the lecture, a lot of students started to tear up also. During my small group, one of the girls said, “you don’t know who to trust these days” and another student responded by saying “don’t worry, Mrs. Greer’s got us”. It was very evident that the bond this teacher has with her students in one like no other.
I think that one of my biggest takeaways is Mrs. Greer’s approach to multicultural education. She handles this in a way that I would like to in my own classroom someday. She had projects displayed around the room from a day they had called “around the world”. Each student got to fill out a poster displaying where they are from, some of their beliefs and traditions, and their favorite food. By doing this, she is learning about each child’s background without singling anyone out, or making anyone uncomfortable. This is a remarkable way to go about this
