Genocide: the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. Many ethnic groups had to deal with genocide such as Jews, Native Tribes, African Americans, and Armenians. Millions of people have died due to a couple of people's opinion against their ethnic group. Genocide, an often misunderstood topic, has impacted people throughout history; we need solutions.
Why does genocide happen? It happens due to fear, anger, or aggression towards a certain group of people. They are being discriminated because of the way the look or their religion. For example, in the Ottoman Empire( now Turkey) they had a Muslim government, but they also contained other religious groups like Armenians, who are Christians. The Ottoman Empire was falling apart by the time World War 1 started. A well group of Armenians were businessmen, so the government thought they were taking their money because the were very wealthy. The government suspected that Armenians were disloyal because of their religion. They feared that the Armenians might ally themselves with Russia and attack the Ottoman Empire. The worst genocide in history is the holocaust. The holocaust started in 1933 and lasted for 12 years(1945). Other ethnic groups were targeted, but Jews were targeted the most during this time. The overall deaths was 17 million. Around 6 million Jews were killed. The reason why the Jews were targeted the most is because when Hitler was younger, he wanted to be an artist, and stayed in Vienna for a couple of years. Nearly 9% of the two million residents were Jewish. In Vienna there was a lot of anti-Jewish newspapers and magazines and an anti-Jewish mayor (Karl Lueger).
