A job analysis is the second component needed to construct a performance management system following the collection of information about the organization’s mission and strategic goals, which will be discussed later. The job analysis allows job incumbents to layout the tasks, knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly referred to as KSAs needed to perform the job. These elements of the job are then related back to the organization’s mission and strategic goals to create a performance management system that strives to accomplish organizational goals. As the Senior Human Resources Officer, Major Hines works at the brigade level and oversees personnel services for seven battalion human resources shops which amount to 34 soldiers serving various human resources roles. These roles range from other Human Resources Officers to Human Resource Specialists providing personnel services such as records management, personnel accountability, and strength management. Major Hines was asked to describe her job description, which she stated as being”responsible for providing personnel support that affects soldiers’ overall welfare and well-being, while assisting commanders by accounting for and keeping soldiers combat-ready,” this is also the duty description as defined by the Army for this position (Careers & Jobs, 2015). Major Hines was asked to describe her daily tasks as well as the required knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform her job, these results are displayed in Table 1 by category with ratings for the level frequency and critically that the item is used on the job.
