The purpose of this memorandum is to explain my leadership philosophy and establish a set standard. In order for our unit to operate at maximum proficiency, every soldier must maintain a level of respect and accountability for their superiors and subordinates, those to their left and right flanks, and perhaps most importantly for themselves. In order for that respect to exist, everyone within that organization from its leaders to the newest member must uphold themselves to the highest standards mentally, morally, and physically. 1. Learning. Being mentally fit is critical for every member of the team if we are to rely on each other in garrison and in battle. Morality. Having strong values and virtues that define one’s character is important to have. Our morality helps us make decisions that align with our individual and societal identity. As American Soldiers, we play a dual role of professional warriors and representatives of the United States. It is our obligation to live up to the values that our profession stands for. Morality comes from many different places. For some of us, it derives from a religious or spiritual inspiration. To others, morality is instilled at a young age from teachers, coaches, and other youth group mentors. Many times the line between what is right and wrong is not clear; it’s hard to always do the right thing. Having a strong morality doesn’t mean that you have to make the best choice in hindsight, but rather making the best decisions at the time based on the facts as they appear at that time. Our ability to make strong moral decisions is strengthened by being receptive to learning. The more one is exposed to different things in the world, the more he or she can see past prejudices and make decisions that are good for all. As a leader, I need to know that my Soldiers are capable of making the right
