Why does catholic church possess the power to influence and change your values as a person? In the novel “The Rain God” by Arturo Islas, we were able to see many different characters with different attributes. Miguel Chico which is one the main protagonist of the novel, throughout the novel we saw how Miguel Chico push himself to be someone he’s not due to his family religion beliefs. Miguel Chico feels trap in his own circle because of his sexual orientation and, because of the pressure of his family values. Miguel Chico tries to hide his sexual preference because of his family affiliation with the catholic church. Miguel Grande which is Miguel Chico father throughout the novel call his family sinners. He’s a typical macho guy who is a close mind, and doesn’t believes that homosexuality is one of the biggest sins that a person can make. Miguel’s Chico family is proud of him because of his academic excellence, but they don’t know of he tries to distance himself from them because of the lack of freedom he had when he used to live with them as a kid. On the novel it shows how family values play a big role on Miguel Chico and on Moma Chona, she’s Miguel Chico grandma. Moma Chona believes that family values come first before anything, no matter how a person feels deep inside, their values need to be first. She’s a catholic which makes sense she wants her family to well respected and to follow the values her parents taught her. But again she brings these values from the catholic church, if the catholic church says that being homosexual is a sin. Miguel Chico grew up thinking it’s a sin to be gay, that’s why he hasn’t come out to his family, and decided to move away from the where he can live a normal life without anyone judging for who is
