“You’re one in a million,” (Pfeffer, 4). In the short story,” Ashes,” by Susan Beth Pfeffer, Ashleigh’s parents are divorced. She sees her mom every day except Tuesday; which was when she sees her dad. Ashleigh was having a hard decision if she should take the money or not. Ashleigh did not take the money because she figured out her dad was using her, her dad breaks promises, and her mom was a better role model. Ashleigh did not take the money because she figured out her dad was using her. First, her dad wants her to take the money out of her mom’s teapot. This proves Ashleigh’s dad was using her because when she got upstairs, she figured out her dad was using her. The fact he parked far away shows he knew he was doing something wrong. First, Ashleigh’s mom went to college at night. Also, the author stated, “ Mom, who was still working on completing her degree, took Tuesday and Thursday evening classes…” (Pfeffer, 1). This explains that Ashleigh’s mom was a role model because she was responsible and cares about her life ahead of her. Next, her mom acts more mature than her dad. This shows her mom was a role model because mature people are acceptable to look up to and she looks up to her mom. Finally, she has enough money to live. This shows that Ashleigh’s mom was a role model because she can afford enough of her needs; unlike her dad who was always trying to borrow money from the mom. Because her mom was a role model, Ashleigh did not take the money. Because she figured out her dad was using her, her dad breaks promises, and her mom was a better role model, Ashleigh did not take the money.
