Black Panther Member Assata Shakur said in her autobiography “Nobody in the world, nobody in history, has ever gotten their freedom by appealing to the moral sense of the people who were oppressing them.” After World War II the call to action to recognize the inequalities minorities in America faced was at an all-time high. On July 2nd, 1964, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act, making it illegal to discriminate based on race, sex, religion or origin. The passing of this law made it seem as though all was well within the United States and although the country was making a step in the right direction there were many issues, especially within the Black Community. In 1966 students Huey Newton and Bobby Seale took matters into their own hands. The two of them felt as though Martin Luther King’s nonviolent efforts would not produce results fast enough and that they had seen no change in their lives. The two of them founded the Black Panther Party for Self Defense to support and protect their community. …show more content…
