In the pursuit of facts and actuality in Astronomy it is often hard for science-fiction movie goers to understand the lingo used among Hollywood big leagues and “astronauts” when trying to find the “real science” involving movies about our galaxies and others for that matter. With ridiculous space movies such as Armageddon and Bring Him Home starring Matt Damon it can be hard for audiences to under what scientific methods and calculations are accurate during space explorations and findings. This semester during Astronomy of the Solar System 1010 we were tasked in seeking the truth behind the science of both Hidden Figures and Apollo 13 starring Tom Hanks (my favorite actor of all time).

Though the movie was widely acclaimed for its accuracy many things about the film were just Hollywood smoke screens. According to an article from Scientific American by Elizabeth Howells (original written for Space.com) on January 27th, 2017 explains some of the inaccuracies in the movie’s plot. As written by Howells many women such as Katherine Jackson were hired by NASA as Computers also known as human calculators but as the movies shows all the so called “computers” are African American but according to the essay many of the human computers were a many different ethnics backgrounds. Also of huge point made in the headline is the idea of human calculators were not of new thing as shown in the film. “Beginning in 1935, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a precursor of NASA, hired hundreds of women as computers.
