My fellow Athenians, I am here today to express the innocence that lies in my actions. Whilst many of you have heard my accusers, I feel it is only just for these fair citizens to hear the truth and nothing else. These claims of my wrongdoing may have swayed the views of some, but I stand here not only to defend my life, but to defend those whose views have also changed. Take this as you please, but in the end I will have delivered honesty and will leave with integrity. Only the glorious Gods and Goddesses may judge, and they will ultimately decide my fate. To begin, I want to express my thoughts and beliefs, which have been questioned throughout by my accusers. First I must mention that I have never been defiant towards the laws and am unaware of how these proceedings exactly go. Indeed, I place my faith into the hands of the greater power and beings. To condemn myself would mean you would be sending me to the unknown, for which we know is more powerful than all the earth. Now I understand many of you have come here today perceiving my teachings to be corrupt and unethical. However, if you were to end my life, you would be taking a chance of sending me to the heavens, the most rewarding gift of all. While I will not stand here before you and pretend to not fear the worst, I do believe that if I am convicted then death will not do much. It may give the sense that my ideas are no longer being spread, and my terrible acts are no more, but this will not stop others from doing the same. My fellow Athenians, I say I am innocent and only spread the truth. Do not simply base your opinions on poets, craftsmen, rhetoricians or whomever, base them on what you believe can help yourself and make you feel as though you have lived a virtuous
