The Soviet Union and Germany were finally defeated, leaving Japan as the only one left to brawl against the allies. About 60 million people had lost their lives in this war; and the Japanese did not show any interest in surrendering. The Allies had a number of ideas on how to end the world war. However, when the atomic bomb became available, it appeared to be the most promising way to end the war as soon as possible and without the drawbacks of the alternatives. The research allowed the creation and advancement in technologies such as: development of clean energy sources, submarines and aircrafts, advancements in the medical field and a turning point in warfare. Nuclear energy developed a possible clean source that creates steam, which is less damaging to the environment as oppose to carbon dioxide. Submarines and aircrafts were able to function without refueling as often when using nuclear energy. Nuclear medicine made it possible to determine the structure and function of various aspects of the body; the making of all these were great advances in technology.
The dropping of the two atomic bombs lowered the Japanese morale in winning the war. Murray Sayle from The New Yorker explains how their morale dropped so much that 2,000 Japanese officers and civilians killed themselves over the next few days. Emperor Hirohito said that the war is not “to Japan's advantage….
