During World War two there were many arguments for and against the use of the atomic bomb on Japan. On December 7th 1941, Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor. The United States could no longer remain neutral, instead the US was forced into the war. The United States then used a strategy known as Island Hopping. This strategy proved to be effective for the United States but they had to overcome many obstacles. After President Truman went over the pros and cons of his plan, he decided to end the war in August of 1945 by dropping the atomic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The dropping of the atomic bomb on these two cities forced Japan to surrender. During World War two there were many arguments for the use of the atomic bomb on Japan. These arguments are proven in sources two, four, and six. In source two the Japanese people were left with blood disorders from exposure to the atomic bomb. Some of these blood disorders were leukemia, cancer, and tumors. The Japanese people were also left with irreversible injuries to their cells, tissues, and organs. The drop of the atomic bomb would leave many Japanese people dead. The number of Japanese people with causalities after the drop of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima was 135,000 people. The causalities after dropping the atomic bomb on Nagasaki was 64,000 people. (Source 4) The causality rate was greater in Hiroshima. This is because Hiroshima was on flat land. Whereas Nagasaki was on more elevated land. (OK) Supreme Commander Eisenhower felt the opposite way in which President Truman felt. Supreme Commander Eisenhower felt Japan was “seeking someway to surrender” so the use of the atomic bomb was unnecessary. He also felt “Japan was already defeated.” (Source
