One of the newest trends is to have a bigger backside. The look has manifested it’s self in women on television and frequently in music videos. The enlargement of the Gluteus Maximus is the sought after look, however there can be serious complications if the process is done surgically and not naturally. The Gluteal augmentation procedure involves either making many incisions to add a filler or double incisions in the intergluteal cleft and placing implants into the buttocks. Following numerous surgeries complaints were made that there were side affects and one in particular was atrophy in the gluteal muscles. Atrophy is the deterioration of a tissue or organ’s function. A team from the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital in Rio de Janeiro ran a yearlong trial to uncover the connection between the gluteal augmentation surgery and the adverse reaction atrophy. In order to do this, the researchers followed numerous women following their surgery and monitored the changes in the function of the gluteal muscle. The investigative team concluded 6.14% of patients developed some degree of atrophy in the left side while 6.43% developed some amount in the right side. Some possible reasons could be that the participants didn’t exercise as instructed, if they sat for too long, bad stretching habits, the maturity of muscles (age), or if the person had a previous
