To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is a book about a young girl named Scout who lives in a town in Alabama called Maycomb. The book takes place in the 1930’s and talks about the racial and equality issues of the time period. Scout's father is a lawyer and his name is Atticus, her brother's name is Jeremy but he is called Jem throughout the book. The book is based on two main plots the trial for a black man named Tom Robinson accused of rape and a mysterious man named Arthur Radley who had been locked in his house for well over twenty years. Atticus gets a lot of hate from the community in Maycomb because he is defending a colored person. Harper Lee uses characterization in the book to show the theme of people are kind and evil. Mr. Underwood is a perfect example of this theme because of the part of the book where Atticus is at the jail when the lynch mob comes. This part shows Mr. Underwood's kind side, but he said he can't be anywhere near a black person which shows his evil side. Dubose is another example of people who are kind and evil because of the part where she dies and shows her good morals. Mrs. Dubose is the mean lady in the neighborhood because of her calling people names and talking bad about Atticus to his kids, she even talks about Scout and Jem’s deceased mother. Mrs. Dubose’s good side was that she broke her morphine addiction before she died so she could die free of any drugs. Atticus was explaining to Jem Mrs. Dubose was going to leave this world without owing anything to anyone so Atticus told him “‘She said she meant to break herself of it before she died and that's what she did’” (Lee 148). Mrs. Dubose wanted to end her addiction to morphine and she did before she died. Even though Mrs. Dubose talked bad about everyone and was super mean she still did some good things in her life such as stopping the morphine
