A Hero In Many Ways
Heros are known for having positive qualities, one of the many being courage. This is true of Atticus Finch in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. First, Atticus Finch is a hero towards his children throughout the entire novel. He is also a hero towards the towns people when shooting the mad dog. Atticus Finch is a hero in court when he defends Tom Robinson. Atticus Finch is the true hero of the novel as he represents the forces of justice.
Atticus Finch is always showing his children the right thing to do. Atticus teaches his children to not judge anyone. Scout talks to Atticus about her problems in school and gets good advice: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until

Atticus does not care what other people think about him defending a negro. Atticus tries to explain to Scout why he is defending a negro: “For a number of reasons, the main one is if I didn’t I couldn’t hold my head in town, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (100). This shows that Atticus is not racist and is trying to be a heroic figure to negros in Maycomb. Atticus always puts people before himself. He is completely selfless. Atticus looks past the fact that he will not win the Tom Robinson case. Atticus explains to Scout why he is defending Tom even though he will not win: “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” (101). This is proof that Atticus has a big heart and will try with all he has to help people which is very heroic. Atticus is an evident hero in law, towards all races.
