Atticus Finch was a great and honorable man who always put others before himself. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch was assigned to Tom Robinson’s case of raping a white woman. Although Atticus tried his hardest to defend Tom, they lost. Atticus Finch was an inspirational man; consequently, many regard him as a hero because of the following: he taught his children good morals, he showed what true bravery was, and, finally, he was an example for all to follow to end all prejudices against black people. Atticus Finch was a hero because he taught his children good morals and to respect the dignity of all. This is shown when Atticus told Scout not to say the ‘n word’ because it is common. Atticus showed he was brave by staying at the jail to keep Tom safe, even when he knew he could be killed. Another way Atticus demonstrated bravery was when he told Jem to keep reading to Mrs. Dubose, even when he knew she said mean things about their family. Atticus said, "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." He said this because Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict who, without their knowing, was using Scout and Jem to stop using morphine for longer and longer everyday. One final reason Atticus has shown he was brave was by teaching his children what a good moral foundation is. Although the Finch family is made fun of because of their beliefs, they stayed true to themselves. Atticus was very courageous; thus, he tried his best to end racism in any way he
